Books For The Middle Grade Reader In Your Life

Written By: Deanna

I remember growing up that I always loved books, really I did. But I hated reading. I couldn't read (at what I thought was a good enough level) for quite a while. I think a big part of that, looking back, was that there weren't a lot of books I wanted to read. One of the big reasons I became a writer was because there weren't books that I knew about at my reading level that I wanted to read. So, today I wanted to share a post with some of the books I did love, and others I found later on that I've grown to love, in hopes that if you have a little one who isn't enjoying reading, you can help inspire them.

Note: Shootout to my husband who helped with this post! You have no idea how lucky I am to have you.

Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery
It all starts when Harold's human family, the Monroe's, goes to see the movie Dracula, and young Toby accidentally sits on a baby rabbit wrapped in a bundle on his seat. How could the family help but take the rabbit home and name it Bunnicula? Chester, the literate, sensitive, and keenly observant family cat, soon decides there is something weird about this rabbit. Pointy fangs, the appearance of a cape, black-and-white coloring, nocturnal habits: it sure seemed like he was a vampire bunny. When the family finds a white tomato in the kitchen, sucked dry and colorless, well, Chester becomes distraught and fears for the safety of the family. "Today, vegetables. Tomorrow, the world!" he warns Harold. Goodreads.

Pendragon: The Merchant of Death
Bobby Pendragon is a seemingly normal fourteen-year-old boy. He has a family, a home, and even Marley, his beloved dog. But there is something very special about Bobby.

He is going to save the world.

And not just Earth, as we know it. Bobby is slowly starting to realize that life in the cosmos isn't quite what he thought it was. And before he can object, he is swept off to an alternate dimension known as Denduron, a territory inhabited by strange beings, ruled by a magical tyrant, and plagued by dangerous revolution.

If Bobby wants to see his family again, he's going to have to accept his role as savior, and accept it wholeheartedly. Because, as he is about to discover, Denduron is only the beginning... Goodreads.

Vampirates: Demons of the Ocean
Connor and Grace are twins, orphaned after their widowed father's death. Rather than being adopted by the town's busy-bodies, they decide to set sail for new pastures in their father's last possession - his sailing boat. When a vicious storm sees their boat capsize, the twins are separated until two mysterious ships sail to their rescue. Goodreads.

Mister Monday: The Keys to the Kingdom #1
Arthur Penhaligon's first days at his new school don't go too well, particularly when a fiendish Mister Monday appears, gives Arthur a magical clock hand, and then orders his gang of dog-faced goons to chase Arthur around and get it back. But when the confused and curious boy discovers that a mysterious virus is spreading through town, he decides to enter an otherworldly house to stop it. After meeting Suzy Blue and the first part of "the Will" (a frog-looking entity that knows everything about the House), Arthur learns that he's been selected as Rightful Heir to the House and must get the other part of the clock hand in order to defeat Monday. That means getting past Monday's henchmen and journeying to the Day room itself. Thankfully, Arthur is up to the challenge, but as he finds out, his fight seems to be only one-seventh over. The House of the Scorpion
Matteo Alacran was not born; he was harvested with the DNA from El Patron, lord of a country called Opium. Can a boy who was bred to guarantee another's survival find his own purpose in life? And can he ever be free? Goodreads.

As you will no doubt be able to tell, I've also attached Goodreads links to all the books I've suggested. Goodreads is a website all about reading. It's about finding new books and keeping track of what you have read, as well as connecting with your friends over the books you've read and setting challenges. You can even start a book club on there! It can be a great way to motivate the younger ones to keep at it. I know, even as a full grown adult, it helps to motivate me!
