The Best DIY Body Butter

Written By: Denise Leduc

When it comes to having the best moisturizer, you don't have to spend a lot of money, or buy products full of ingredients you can't pronounce. Sometimes, the simplest is the best.

While at the gym, I have actually had a woman reach out, rub my arm and say, "Oh my gosh, your skin is so soft." It was a little strange, but I was only too happy to share my skin care secret - coconut oil.

Reputed throughout out the world for its healing properties, coconut oil is an amazing moisturizer. The saturated fats in coconut oil keep the skin nourished and soft. Trace amounts of vitamin E give coconut oil anti-aging properties. Furthermore capric, caprylic and auric acid found in coconut oil protects the skin from microbial infections.

To make your own body butter you need
-organic virgin coconut oil
- 1 - 3 of your favorite essential oils

Both ingredients can be found at your local health food store and many large grocery stores now carry these products. You can buy a jar of $10-15 and I find these jars last several months.

There are dozens of essential oils to choose from and come at every price point. Lavender, orange, and lemon are some inexpensive options, whereas rose, jasmine and sandalwood are pricier but do smell divine. Once purchased, essential oils will last quite a while.

To Make:
simply melt your coconut oil, either in the microwave for approximately 30 seconds or on the stove top. When completely melted, allow to cool 1 minute. Add in 30 drops of one essential oil or a combination of up to three scents. Put into a tupperware container, place in a cupboard and allow to harden.

To Use:
When getting out of the bath or shower lightly towel off leaving skin still damp, apply your DIY body butter to your entire body. I avoid putting coconut oil on my face, but know some people who do.
